We will be at the upcoming Homeless Connect Edmonton on October 04, 2009
Homeless Connect:
Not a celebration...
Not a fair...or a referral event...
...Is One-Day CONSUMER FOCUSED One-Stop
...Is equal parts welcoming homeless neighbors into the community, changing the way resources are accessed and working towards quantifiable results for persons who are without places to call home.
...Is a component of the City of Edmonton and Government of Alberta's 10 year plan to end homelessness.
Unites community... merges political and civic will in a one-day, one-stop, and one-place array of resources and services to provide the hospitality and the support to create a trajectory to root out homelessness.
Homeless Connect Edmonton is designed to improve access to services, increase knowledge and understanding of homelessness issues, and foster collaboration between not for profits, government, business, and individual community members to end homelessness. Individuals experiencing homelessness or those who are at risk of being homeless are able to receive a variety of services and information on housing, benefits, legal services, medical - both physical and mental health services, dental care, clothing, free glasses, immunization, foot care and appropriate shoes.
Homeless Connect Edmonton is based on a service model which originated in San Francisco in 2004 and has since spread to over 200 cities across the U.S., Canada, and Australia. The first such Canadian event, Project Homeless Connect took place in Calgary April 26, 2008 and on May 23, 2009 Calgary hosted it's 5th Project Homeless Connect. The inaugural Homeless Connect Edmonton took place on October 5, 2008 with the second event taking place on May 24, 2009 with a 3rd Homeless Connect scheduled for October 2009 at the Shaw Conference Centre.
Homeless Connect events vary in size, content, and frequency from community to community but have the common intent to end homelessness for members of their community. These events are catalysts for community involvement; generating new partnerships, commitment, and investment to end homelessness.
